What is Cognitive Hypnotherapy?
First of all: what it's not ...
Traditional hypnotherapy aims to take you into a deep state of trance. It works on the belief that in this state you're open to the suggestions made by the therapist.
These suggestions tend to be focused on the problem, so clients with the same issue tend to be treated in the same way. Instead, as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I approach each person as an individual. I identify the unique mind-pattern of your issue and tailor specially for you a programme to guide you towards the solution that you want for yourself.
For example, two people may both smoke 20 cigarettes a day. For one it may be a response to boredom, the other may perceive smoking as essential to remaining calm.
The route to a solution for each will be different.
I believe that trance is something everyone experiences everyday, for example have you ever been so absorbed in a book or film that the hours seemed to fly by in a moment? Or been in a boring meeting where every minute seemed like an hour? Or been so lost in thought driving to work that you don’t remember the last few miles?
It's familiar, natural and doesn't need to be deep for effective therapy. So you can be aware that you are in control - and there are strictly no swinging watches.
And because this approach works within your model of the world (there are no 'one-size-fits-all' scripts) - the changes you wish to make are more likely to be accepted by your unconscious mind, making them ongoing and permanent.
It's great value for money! You'll receive tools, techniques and strategies to use for yourself -- for life! The therapy effect continues to multiply between sessions and long after therapy is finished.
So who's driving the car?
Hypnotherapy uses these natural hypnotic mental states to help you communicate with the part of your mind we refer to as ‘the unconscious’. The unconscious acts to protect us by filtering the millions of pieces of information received from our five senses (sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing) and working out if there are any threats nearby to move away from, or sources of pleasure to move towards.
People often fear that hypnosis will make them lose control, surrender their will, or say and do something stupid - myths created by stage hypnotists to enhance their acts and egos. In fact, the opposite is true - hypnosis is a natural everyday state of focussed attention which a person creates for themselves, and over which they have total control.
This is why a person will not say or do anything they would not normally do, why it is not possible to get 'stuck' in hypnosis, and why many people are surprised just how aware of their surroundings they are during hypnosis - it just feels so natural. Because it is.
